About Buddy System Solar
After the blackout in San Diego during the fall of 2011 we realized people weren’t prepared for even little emergencies much less a big disaster. During that blackout I was at home with the family and my husband was at work. We are a television family, night holidays, weekends and disasters are our busiest times. So needless to say my husband didn’t come home from work until the next day.
The family on the other hand was sitting in the dark. So I got creative. First I got the battery powered TV we had in the camping gear, but the battery wasn’t fully charged. Then my husband called to check in and said, “get the ”Little Buddy” as we call it (the power unit that jump starts our minivan when we leave the doors open.) I used the Little Buddy to power and charge the little closed captioned TV. Then I found the old boom box out in the garage to amplify the TV’s sound (it was too soft for me to hear). My son and daughter found all the connectors needed and our little car inverter with USB charger. Now I could charge my cell phone too. All this was powered via alligator clips and cigarette lighter adapters. Yes we have weird stuff in our shed!
Our home phone was working, because we have 1 really old style phone that just plugs into the phone jack in the wall. It’s not a VOIP or battery with AC base powered phone.
With the propane camping lanterns going, our house was the only place in the neighborhood that was lit up. People started to gather. Hot dogs on the BBQ bread and soda. About 20 people in all. We had great time.
But some of our neighbors had no flashlights or should I say dead flashlights and a some were in their late 70′s and 80′s. A generator could be heard a ways away for awhile until it ran out of gas. Darkness can be dangerous if not prepared.
When my husband finally came home the power was still out but we sat in a lit room with the little television still going. The venture to the bathroom was dark though.(At least our pump station had a generator)
It was after this we realized not everyone has the time, knowledge or the junk in the shed to make a simple power outage tolerable and safe. We started out just trying to make a few bucks promoting safety and simple easy, plug and play back up power units. Then we took it one step further by creating a simple, and easy to build permanent back up system for the house.
